PCS Checklist & Timeline for Fort Knox

A PCS move has a lot of moving parts (pun intended). This checklist breaks down everything you need to do from the moment you receive orders to Fort Knox through your first week at your new duty station. Print it out, tape it to the fridge, and check things off as you go.

90 Days Out — Receive Orders

60 Days Out — Plan & Prepare

  • Finalize housing decision (buy, rent, or on-post)
  • If buying: make offer, begin closing process
  • If renting: secure lease, pay deposit
  • If Knox Hills: complete application, get on waitlist if needed
  • Arrange temporary housing for arrival period
  • Book TLE-eligible lodging
  • Begin school enrollment process for children
  • Schedule HHG pickup date with transportation office
  • Forward mail through USPS
  • Obtain medical and dental records
  • Get copies of school records for children
  • Research spouse employment options

30 Days Out — Final Prep

  • Confirm all moving arrangements
  • Set up utilities at new home (if off-post): electric, water, internet, gas
  • Cancel utilities at current location (schedule disconnect after departure)
  • Update insurance policies (auto, renters/homeowners)
  • Update vehicle registration (Kentucky has 30-day transfer requirement)
  • Prepare "first night" essentials box for your POV
  • Clean and clear current housing
  • If selling current home: ensure sale is on track (see selling at PCS guide)

Moving Week

  • HHG pickup / complete PPM loading
  • Final cleaning and inspection of current housing
  • Travel to Fort Knox (keep MALT receipts for fuel and tolls)
  • Check into temporary housing upon arrival

First Week at Fort Knox

  • In-process at your gaining unit
  • Complete installation in-processing
  • Enroll children in school
  • Set up DEERS/ID cards if needed
  • Register vehicles on post
  • Receive HHG delivery and unpack
  • Explore your new neighborhood
  • Register for on-post amenities (gym, library, CDC)
  • Explore E-town's dining and activities
