Temporary Housing During PCS to Fort Knox

Most PCS moves to Fort Knox involve a period of temporary housing — the gap between arriving at your new duty station and moving into permanent housing. Understanding your options and planning ahead can make this transition period much smoother for your family.

Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE)

TLE reimburses lodging and meal expenses for up to 10 days (combined at origin and destination) during a PCS move. The daily rates are set by the Joint Travel Regulation and vary by location. At Fort Knox, the TLE rate covers most on-post and nearby hotel options. Keep all receipts — you'll need them for reimbursement.

On-Post Lodging

Fort Knox has on-post lodging managed through IHG Army Hotels. Rooms are available for PCSing families at government rates. Availability can be tight during peak PCS season (May-August), so book as early as possible once you have orders. The on-post location eliminates the commute hassle during in-processing.

Knox Hills Temporary Housing

If you're on the Knox Hills waitlist for on-post housing, temporary furnished housing may be available through the Knox Hills office. Contact them directly at (502) 378-3708 to inquire about availability and terms. This can bridge the gap between arrival and your permanent on-post unit.

Off-Post Extended Stay

Several extended-stay hotels in the Elizabethtown and Radcliff area cater to PCSing families:

  • Hotels along the I-65 corridor in E-town offer weekly rates
  • Extended-stay properties near Fort Knox gates provide kitchenette units
  • Some hotels offer military/government rates — always ask

Tips for Temporary Housing with Family

  • Book early: PCS season (May-August) fills up fast. Reserve as soon as you have orders.
  • Choose wisely: A kitchenette saves significant money on meals for families.
  • Bring essentials: Pack a "first night" bag with sheets, towels, basic cookware, and kids' comfort items in your POV — don't put everything in HHG.
  • Location matters: Staying near Fort Knox or in E-town gives you the best access to in-processing, house hunting, and daily needs.
  • Pets: Confirm pet policies before booking. Pet-friendly options exist but may be limited.
  • Start house hunting immediately: Use your temporary housing period to tour neighborhoods, meet with your agent, and make housing decisions while you're boots-on-ground.
